As AME’s Health Coach, I think it’s pretty obvious health is a top concern for me. When Designer Director, Beth Forte came to me to talk about how our overall health affects the health of our hair, I couldn’t have been more excited. I’m a ponytail wearing kind of girl so I sometimes forget to check in on the health of my hair. This was a great reminder. Here’s what Beth had to say:

Fall has officially arrived at AME Salon! We have been in full swing using the latest methods in cutting and coloring on our fabulous guests. However, babylights, ombré, and the Lob will only look as good as the health of your hair. Healthy hair is shiny, manageable, and nourished. Brunette’s and Red’s will appear richer, Blondes will be brighter, and haircuts will flow better if hair is in good health.

Here are four tips to get your hair in the best condition:

  1. Be healthy and it’ll show in your hair. When your body is not being cared for by poor nutrition and dehydration, your hair suffers too. Your body will give your major organs what it needs first.  Dr. Mark Hyman states, “Your entire body and all the core systems in it interact as a single sophisticated symphony.” To strengthen and moisturize your hair follicle you need to eat foods rich in biotin, vitamin B, healthy fats, and beta carotene. Almonds, eggs, avocados, salmon, chicken, dark leafy greens, chia seeds, sweet potatoes, carrots, and mangoes are full of those vitamins and minerals. To dig further into this topic, I would suggest meeting with our health coach, Alyssa.
  2. Get trims regularly. Every 6-8 weeks or however long your stylist recommends. It’ll prevent split ends from splitting further up your hair shaft and prevent breakage.
  3. Limit heat styling tools. Too much heat can damage the cuticle. Kevin Murphy’s ‘Damage Manager’ is an instant heat shielding spray used before heated appliances. KM’s ‘Fresh Hair’ spray can be used to stretch out blow-drys. It removes odors and oil and gives body and texture.
  4. Olaplex in salon and take home Treatment. Olaplex links broken bonds in the hair during and after chemical services making them stronger than they were before. The results are amazing!

Focusing on your overall wellness and nutrition, seeing your stylist for trims, blow-drying less, and using good quality products will guarantee beautiful, shiny, healthy hair!

AME has all of your gift giving needs for Mother’s Day! We have put together some of our favorites to make your gift giving easier:

Brittani, one of our lovely nail techs-recommends one of our newest nail products; CND Nail Rescue. This is a great option for those who often receive shellac polish. CND Nail Rescue repairs damaged nails with the power of Keratin protein and moisturizing jojoba oil.

Jackie is a fabulous estetician here at AME. Jackie recommends trying our Ferulic acid and retinol brightening solution as well as the Ferulic & Retinol Anti-Aging Moisturizer by Dr. Dennis Gross. This solution feels so great on your skin and helps prevent and treat sun damage and wrinkles. The moisturizer helps to counteract the visible signs of aging, increase its natural moisture barrier, and restore elasticity to sagging skin. Jackie also recommends the Alpha Beta Daily Face Peel pads- one of my favorites. These pads are like wiping a magic wand over your face. Especially suited for stubborn skin conditions that have not responded favorably to other anti-aging treatments, this peel improves the appearance of fine lines, reduces pores, and treats breakouts. Regular use can visibly improve dark spots and skin tone.

I absolutely LOVE the Farmhouse Fresh product line. One of my very favorites is the Nectar Bath Soak. This is a powder you add to your bath water that smells wonderful and leaves your skin silky smooth. Encourage mom to relax with a nice tub soak this Mother’s Day.

Library of Flowers is a new fragrance line for us and I am loving it. My favorite scent is Honeycomb. These scents are all clean, light, and refreshing. Library of Flowers has lotions, cremes, bath milk, bath oil, shower gel, perfume, and candles as well as gift sets. Not to mention, the packaging is beautiful making this line perfect for gift giving. I am loving the coco butter handcreme in the Honeycomb scent and it comes in a cute, little tin. If you’re not sure which scent to try, we have sampler tins that include 3 different roll-on scents. Now through the end of May 2015, Library of Flowers products are 20% off!

Holy Cacao!

“There’s nothing better than a good friend, except a good friend with chocolate.” – Linda Grayson

Cacao has often been referred to as a superfood. It is delicious and has many health benefits. Cacao is beneficial in managing PMS symptoms, metabolizing glucose, keeping the heart healthy, guarding against toxins, easing depression, and it also helps act as a delivery agent for many other superfoods like mushrooms, goji berries, and spirulina not to mention, it is high in minerals. The idea that chocolate is good for us comes from the health benefits of raw cacao. Unfortunately, once we heat the cacao and turn it into your average, traditional chocolate, many of the health benefits referred to have been lost. Consuming raw cacao is a great way to satisfy  your sweet tooth as well as reap some healthy benefits.

What is cacao? Cacao is the purest form of chocolate you can consume. In it’s most natural form cacao is a seed. Everything chocolate comes from this seed known as cocoa beans.  Chocolate does not have sugar or dairy until it is added in.

What is in cacao (and how it’s beneficial to our health)?

Magnesium
heart, brain, muscle cramping, elimination, alkaline, bone strength

Iron
blood

Chromium
balances blood sugar

Copper
blood, immunity

Manganese
blood

Vitamin C
Zinc
immunity, liver, pancreas, skin

Omega-6 Fatty Acids
healthy unless chocolate is cooked and then it is a trans fat

Phenylethlamine
focus, alertness, appetite suppressant

Anandamide
endorphin (same as what is released after exercising)

Tryptophan
mood enhancing

Seratonin
stress defense

Fiber
elimination

Methylxantines
antibacterial, cardiovascular

Oxalic Acid
when cooked is bad for the kidneys

There are many reasons to eat chocolate only when pure and raw.  The oxalic acid and omega 6 fatty acids become problematic (trans fat and oxalates).  There are a lot of delicious ways to use raw cacao.  You can buy nibs, powder, and cacao butter. Blue Mountain Organics carries many great cacao products. One of the special qualities cacao has is that it hides the flavor of foods that might not taste so great to you (or your kids!).  You can eat spirulina with cacao and never even taste it.

One of my favorite recipes with raw cacao is super easy, healthy, and delicious! This protein immunity pudding can be modified according to your tastes and it is really hard to mess it up so feel free to add or subtract ingredients. I’m not a fan of mushrooms so I skip those and I like to add in maca powder.

shutterstock_144951328

Chocolate Protein Immunity Pudding

Ingredients Needed:

1/2 cup coconut milk
1 little chunk of cocoa butter
1 tsp coconut oil
3 Tbsp chia seeds
1/2 cup cacao powder
1 tsp reishi mushroom
1 tsp chaga mushrooms
1 Tbsp spirulina
1 handful of spinach
1 handful frozen strawberries
1 handful goji berries
a very small pinch of raw vanilla

Preparation:

Soak the chia seeds in the coconut milk for 30 minutes. Then place chia seeds and milk in a mixer along with all other ingredients and blend. Sprinkle with cacao nibs if you like. IT IS YUMMY and healthy.

“All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.” – Charles M. Schulz.

There are so many raw goodies you can make with cacao that are really healthy. One of my favorite treats is cacao covered raisins.

Brendan Brazier put out a maca bar recipe for Mother’s day. Those are another one of my favorites!  Raw cacao, maca, maple syrup, macadamia nuts, coconut….yummmmm.  They make a delicious and good for you treat!

Another good use for cacao is to make protein bars with raw cacao, hemp protein, coconut oil and a few other wonderful ingredients of your choice.

I also make smoothies with cacao, coconut milk*, banana, and spinach. It is healthy as can be and it tastes delicious!

*It is important to use a non-dairy milk when making recipes with cacao as research has shown that dairy inhibits the antioxidant absorption in raw cacao

How do you cacao? Please share any good recipes!

I was talking with one of AME’s senior stylists, Meaghan and she is super excited for some new Spring looks! I had a blast hearing about these Spring hair trends.

859919_1401517003463006_4915777146302892638_o

Here’s what Meaghan had to say:
Ombré is still going strong, and that’s great because it’s SOOO low maintenance! It requires very little touch-ups and looks fabulous as it grows out!
image1
Another really popular look is face framing highlights, which I like to call “Baby-Lights”. This is our strongest attempt at recreating that color we all had when we were little. Beautiful and seamless! Now, if only there were a way to make our life and responsibilities as care-free as well.

image2

Lastly, we have balayage which means “to sweep” on the color free-hand using no foils. This is a subtle way to add some color and brightness without going over the top!

Don’t worry, guys – I didn’t forget about you. The fades are still really strong this season with options from keeping it very professional all the way to super hipster.

I can’t wait to get your hair Spring fresh! Whatever the look you’re going for, your stylist is here to help! Be sure to schedule a consultation/appointment!

Digestive Health

Author: Alyssa, Certified Health Coach - April, 1st, 2015 | Category: Blog Posts, Happenings at AME, Health Coaching, Skin Care, Wellness

Tags: , , , , , , , ,

Do you experience constipation, gas, bloating, diarrhea or heartburn? Not only are digestive concerns burdensome and embarrassing but they can often interfere with your everyday life.

If you answered yes to any of the above mentioned troubles there are some simple ways to start changing how you are feeling. Digestive health can often be changed with simple lifestyle adjustments.

shutterstock_125816921_ginger-tea-medium-200x300

Simple Changes

  1. More fruit and vegetables, less red meat.
  2. More whole foods, less processed foods.
  3. Drink freshly squeezed lemons in your water. This is alkalizing and helps to clean the stomach of any residual debris.
  4. Do not ignore the urge to have a bowel movement. Listen to your body.
  5. Eat more fiber (#1). Be sure to eat the skins (when applicable) especially when eating high glycemic foods such as potatoes since the skin contains fiber. Fiber helps to slow the sugar absorption in your body (this is good!).
  6. Skip the NSAID’s (non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs).  Regular use of these drugs can cause peptic ulcers in the digestive tract.
  7. Be careful of use and overuse of other drugs that create digestive problems. Too many antibiotics can strip your gut of good bacteria and this can lead to further health concerns.
  8. Don’t overeat. This one can be difficult especially around the holidays and at social gatherings. Aim to be satisfied not painfully full.
  9. Use herbs for digestion. Some of the most common herbs used for digestion include: ginger, senna leaf, peppermint, dandelion root, burdock root, Turmeric, and milk thistle.
  10. Drink your liquids before and after meals, not during.
  11. Take your time and really chew-chew-chew.  Your body can use energy for other things if you chew your food instead of relying on acid and enzymes to do the job.
  12. Eat slower so you do not swallow a lot of air while you eat.
  13. Do all of the above and skip the laxatives, as your body becomes reliant on them and they are habit-forming.
  14. Smoking and drinking can cause ulcers and heartburn.
  15. Exercise! Just getting up and moving can really help your digestive system. If exercising in public a concern, start off by using workout DVD’s or online workouts. You could also try jumping rope, jumping jacks, and running up and down your stairs if you don’t have a treadmill.  Check out this video from Popsugar Fitness.
  16. Evaluate your relationship with dairy. Dairy is often a culprit when it comes to digestive concerns. Pay attention to how your body responds when you consume dairy products. A food journal is a great tool for doing this.
  17. Probiotics are made up of helpful bacterial and are often very useful when addressing digestive issues. For this reason, consider incorporating a high quality probiotic into your diet.
  18. Don’t be afraid to enlist the help of a specialist (gastroenterologist and health coach). Depending on the severity and how long you have been experiencing these concerns seeking the help of a professional might be your next step. You may want to get a referral from a friend or relative. Remember that they are there to diagnose and treat, prevention lies in your hands.

What’s the Deal with Coconut Oil?

Author: Alyssa, Certified Health Coach - March, 25th, 2015 | Category: Blog Posts, Health Coaching, Wellness

Tags: , , , , , ,

shutterstock_186699734

Ahhh, Coconut oil. Coconut oil can be used for a whole lot of things and the benefits are astounding!

Coconut oil is great in raw food recipes:

I also enjoy cooking with coconut oil. I love to add some to my veggies before roasting them. It gives them such a great flavor.

Coconut oil is also great in showers since it can be used as a cleanser as well as a moisturizer for your whole body, some people use it on their faces.
It’s not a bad idea to keep it on your nightstand to remind yourself to moisturize with it – especially this time of year when our skin has been
left dry from the cold weather.  Coconut oil is great to massage into your scalp.  It is so beneficial for your hair and skin. There is a lot
to be said for anything that is chemical free that we can use on our bodies.  When it comes to using products on my body, I always figure
if you can eat it, that’s a great thing.

There are a lot of ways to use coconut oil and there are even more reasons why you should.

Coconut oil has lauric acid, caprylic acid, capric acid.  These acids give it antimicrobial, antifungal, antibacterial and antioxidant
abilities.  It is mostly saturated fat, 92% with a small percentage being mono unsaturated and poly unsaturated.  Coconut oil is
one of those healthy fats!

Some of the benefits that are attributed to coconut oil include (but not limited to) help with:

shutterstock_218994181

“Coconut oil has fewer calories than any other fat source. Unlike the high-calorie, cholesterol-soaked, long-chain,
saturated animal fats found in meat and dairy products, coconut cream and coconut oil are made of raw saturated fats
containing mostly medium-chain fatty acids that the body can metabolize efficiently and convert to energy quickly.” (Wolfe, 2009)

In the 1940’s, coconut oil was used by some farmers to help fatten up their cows however; the opposite happened-the
cows actually became leaner.

Coconut oil is useful for bone and dental health because it improves calcium and magnesium absorption. This is good for
dental health.  It is especially beneficial to women who are at the age to develop osteoporosis.

When you go to order or purchase your coconut oil this is what you should look for: organic-raw-extra virgin-cold pressed. I love Blue Mountain Organics.

There is also coconut water (yum!), shredded coconut, and coconut butter! Just make sure the products you are
buying do not have added sugars. I love drinking coconut water on its own or adding it to my
smoothies. Coconut water is loaded with potassium and it helps replace fluids and salts lost during exercise.
When I am training for a marathon, I try to drink coconut water every day. I look for raw, organic. I love
Harmless Harvest and Harvest Bay (organic, unflavored variety) brands. I try to avoid Zico, Vita-Coco, O.N.E., and Naked coconut water.

If you don’t already, start adding coconut oil into life, you will not be sorry!

Have You Heard About Olaplex?

Spring has sprung and it’s time to rid yourself of your winter locks and visit your stylist to create your new Spring look.

I was talking with one of our fabulous stylists, Kelly and she had some wonderful suggestions for refreshing your look. I loved hearing about the new, restorative hair protector – Olaplex. Olaplex has been featured in various press as an award-winning, beauty breakthrough treatment.

Kelly

Kelly recommends considering lighter shades for your highlights and color as well as adding layers to your haircut for your Spring look. Ok, now for the exciting part. I had no clue what Olaplex was and being a blonde, I need to know about it and my hair needs to have it. Here is what Kelly had to say about this beauty game-changer:

Olaplex is a great reconstructive treatment that rebuilds the bonds in the hair which can become damaged or even broken during coloring and styling. Olaplex maintains the integrity of the hair leaving it shinier, stronger, and healthier. Olaplex will also make your color last longer.

Since the bonds in your hair break during coloring, Olaplex should be used every time you receive a color treatment. It can also be used before a Keratin treatment or on its own as a separate treatment. Olaplex is also available as a take-home treatment to use once a week!

Treatment plans will vary for each guest so be sure to talk to your stylist for more information.

During the rest of March 2015, you can Save $5 on Olaplex. Book Now!

Check out Allure’s Beauty Breakthroughs 2014 (slide #11) for an in-depth explanation on how Olaplex works.

“Olaplex is a breakthrough in the color department because this is the first time we have even been able to repair the bonds within the hair and actually restore it while also coloring and lightening the hair so that it can be pushed farther than ever before. It’s not a band-aid treatment at all—it permanently restores hair,” says Riawna Capri, co-owner of Nine Zero One salon in West Hollywood, CA.

Just a Spoonful of Turmeric

Author: Alyssa, Certified Health Coach - March, 11th, 2015 | Category: Blog Posts, Health Coaching, recipes, Wellness

Tags: , , , , , ,

shutterstock_144230125

Turmeric is best known for being one of the main spices in curry. I am not a huge fan of curry dishes so I incorporate turmeric in my diet in other ways. Fresh pressed juices, teas, and smoothie recipes are my top choices for getting my turmeric in. I also love to add it to my tofu when I make tofu scramble and sprinkle it on my sautéed veggies.

Turmeric is a relative of ginger and they look very similar with the exception of turmeric being orange on the inside. Keep that in mind when shopping for your turmeric – although, you can’t go wrong with ginger but that’s for another day. Fresh turmeric is best but if that’s not available to you, go for a high quality powder form.

WHY eat turmeric?

Turmeric has countless benefits. These are my favorite benefits but my list is certainly not exhaustive:

shutterstock_249030754

HOW should I eat turmeric?

Turmeric is fat soluble meaning you should eat it with a fat in order to absorb it more effectively. When adding turmeric to my sautéed veggies, I make sure to sauté them in coconut oil. When adding to a smoothie, I make sure to add coconut or almond milk. Avocado is another great fat to pair turmeric with and can be incorporated in a variety of ways: smoothies, rice and veggie dishes, sandwiches.

Eating turmeric with black pepper is ideal because the black pepper increases the bioavailability of turmeric. Bioavailability essentially refers to the efficiency of which a substance is absorbed and made available for the body to use. When possible, add black pepper to your turmeric – I do not do this with my smoothies!

IMG_3559

Green Turmeric Smoothie

Add all ingredients to the blender. I like to add some ice for the consistency. Blend until smooth. Enjoy!

*If using turmeric powder, use 1/2-1 teaspoon **If you prefer a sweeter smoothie, add more fruit.

IMG_2602

As always, if you are taking medications or have certain health conditions, check to make sure turmeric is beneficial and safe for you. Keep in mind, certain quantities of turmeric may lower blood sugar levels, blood pressure, thin the blood.

February is Heart Health Month!

You may have heard, heart disease is the number one cause of death for men and women in the United States and has been for quite some time. This is truly heartbreaking (no pun intended) because there are so many actions we can take in order to help prevent heart disease.

High blood pressure and smoking are two of the top risk factors for heart disease. In addition; lack of physical exercise, poor diet, being overweight, diabetes, and excessive alcohol consumption all increase your risk for heart disease.

images

What can we do to help prevent heart disease?

*The above mentioned are all topics I would love to help you achieve as your health coach. The added accountability, recommendations, and outside perspective truly help people achieve and maintain their health goals. Having a health coach is often the final step people need to achieve balance and optimum health. Please contact me for more information about Health Coaching or contact AME today to set up a consultation! Alyssa@amesalonandspa.com

Check out some of these fabulous tips from PopSugar Fitness on How To Be Healthier. The only tip I do not recommend trying is #18: The 80/20 rule. I really don’t like this eating principle and I find this typically does not work well for people. It is hard to keep understand what 20% of our food intake is and if you take indulging too far, you are likely to negate all of your hard work and dedication. I prefer to just focus on practicing healthy eating most of the time.

AME is currently hosting an online wellness group focusing on heart health and self-care. This group will continue to run until February 28th. We would love to have you! Please let me know if you would like to join us. Alyssa@amesalonandspa.com

Still looking for the perfect gift for someone or maybe even for yourself? Why not give a gift that counts? Your health is the most important thing you have.

People are always asking me what exactly a Health Coach does. I respond that as a health coach, I help people find balance and learn to live their best life possible. Health coaches help you understand your lifestyle habits and then work with you to address those habits and improve on them. One of the best things about Health Coaching is that it is customized to fit each individual’s needs and goals. Since every one of us is different, there is no one size fits all approach to health coaching. Health coaching sessions can cover everything from stress reduction to weight loss/gain, healthy eating and learning how to grocery shop efficiently to healthy relationships as well as everything in between. The majority of people can benefit from health coaching as long as they are committed and ready for change.

There are many reasons people seek the help of a Health Coach, accountability being one of the most important. More often than not, it is very hard to make lifestyle changes and stick to them long-term. Checking in with someone on a routine basis holds you accountable and keeps you honest with yourself. Health coaches help you find the motivation and resources needed to keep on going in the direction of your goals as well as give you support every step of the way.

What are some of the reasons people have a health coach? There are numerous reasons to have a health coach, the following are some of the more common reasons:

  • Feeling constantly stressed out
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Being ready to make lifestyle changes (i.e. working out regularly, healthy cooking) but unsure how to start
  • Tired of being overweight or you recently gained weight and have been unsuccessful in losing it
  • You want to prepare more of your own meals and avoid processed foods
  • Tired of going on and off diets and ready to make healthy living your lifestyle
  • Constant cravings
  • You feel bad more often than good
  • You are confused about all of the food lingo i.e. GMO’s, organic, all natural, erythritol, gluten-free, etc.

One of our fabulous estheticians, Debbie has some great holiday skin care advice for you:

Debbie

“It’s all About that Face, no Trouble!

In light of the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping, shipping and schlepping, the holidays truly are the most wonderful time of year. Generosity abounds, goodwill towards mankind seems effortless. However as important as finding the perfect gift, so is allowing yourself the much needed time to refresh your skin and to give your face the attention it deserves!

Dehydration, dark circles, and tired stress lines are in part due to the hectic pace we keep. Constant indoor/outdoor temperature fluctuation wreaks havoc on your complexion. For your skin to look its best be sure to schedule the time for a professional facial. As your esthetician, we will assess your immediate needs and provide your FACIAL fix as well as help you with your long-term aging remedies. Be sure to drink more water during the winter months because the body works harder to stay warm and uses up its moisture reservoir. Also, consider a humidifier* in your bedroom as this will make a huge improvement on your skin’s moisture retention. Above all, be sure to use a high quality night cream… it’s the most important time for your skin to replenish and restore lost nutrients preparing for yet another day of holiday havoc! 🙂 “

*I use this humidifier and I love it. I definitely notice a difference since using it. Just make sure to clean your humidifier on a regular basis.

Debbie’s top choices for night time care:

Click HERE to view our many facials and then call us to schedule your facial with Debbie or any of our other talented estheticians. I can tell you from experience, you will not be disappointed! My personal favorite is the Mega Peel Facial but your esthetician will help you decide which facial best fits your needs.

I would also recommend the Clarisonic (we carry a variety of colors). I LOVE it! My mom gave me the Clarisonic for Christmas one year and it is by far one of my most favorite gifts. I use it everyday and I love how much it has improved my skin. Feel free to ask Debbie or any of our other estheticians if you would like to learn more about the clarisonic or any of our other skin care products.

pumkin oat cookies

I made these really yummy cookies for Thanksgiving and more since then just to enjoy at home. I can’t say they were a huge hit with my T-Day crowd (I think the pies and other sweets upstaged them) but I love them. They’re not terribly sweet which I like. You can make them plain or dipped in chocolate. The chocolate adds the perfect amount of sweetness. The ingredients are so great, I’ll enjoy a plain one (or chocolate dipped depending on my mood) with breakfast.

Notes:

Who’s making cookies? What kinds? Please let me know if you have a recipe I should try.

Ayurveda Tip #3 Yoga

Yoga Practice

I hear it all the time, “I ‘m not flexible. I can’t do yoga.” The truth is, you’re inflexible because you don’t do yoga.

I hear it all the time, “I ‘m not flexible. I can’t do yoga.”
The truth is, you’re inflexible because you don’t do yoga.

I hear it all the time, “I ‘m not flexible. I can’t do yoga.”

The truth is, you’re inflexible because you don’t do yoga. (this applies to the mind as well, by the way).  Yoga is literally for every body. Because the essence of yoga is union ~ of body, mind, heart and spirit, the practice of it, no matter how quiet or rigorous, is about bringing more awareness to every aspect of your Being.  It’s not important that you can twist your body into a pretzel – most people can’t – even yoga teachers. What’s important is that you spend some time each day on your mat to be present with your body, mind, and spirit. That is, really feeling your body & the messages it is sending you, the state of your mind and emotions, and connecting to your soul – that aspect of you that is perfect just as it is.

Commit to at least 10-15 minutes of gentle stretching and breathing each day and feel the difference it will make in your strength, flexibility, and balance. This translates to strength, flexibility, balance in your life.  Commit to trying it for a month – take a class, buy a book, watch a video, or Google “gentle yoga”. There are many resources out there to help you learn, even classes online.  Yoga is a practice that can always take you deeper so you do not need to learn everything at once.  See if you don’t notice a difference in yourself after several weeks. So relax, stretch and breathe! You’ll find yourself craving it and noticing even more when you don’t do it.

Enjoy!
