Kassandra is our newest esthetician.
Please enjoy learning more about her!

About: I have been a Licensed Esthetician since January 2016 and have been dedicated to the field since graduating from Metro Beauty Academy. I have a passion for growing, continuing education as an Associated Skin Care Professional member and frequent student at the International Dermal Institute. I do all that I can to learn about the skin and to tackle different skin issues as well as new facial techniques so I can better accommodate each and every person who comes to me for any treatment. My passion is connecting with others and making everyone not only look good, but feel good in the process.

Fun Fact: I originally come from an art background, which explains my love for doing makeup (and also expressing myself creatively through my sense of style). Growing up, I was more into arts and literature and although I’m still very keen on both subjects, I’ve found a love for running, yoga, and weightlifting that started in my early twenties.

Another fun fact about me: I’m currently engaged to my boyfriend of 10 years and we have two “furbabies” (cats) named Desi and Daniel.

Favorite Products: Dr. Dennis Gross Hyaluronic Marine Hydration Booster because it’s SO versatile and great for almost all skin types. It’s key ingredient, Hyaluronic Acid, helps to bind moisture to the skin and aids in plumping up the skin along with a blend of Evening Primrose Oil, Coconut Juice, and Watermelon extract. The booster is perfect for any moisturizer, foundation, or concealer. I use it in my makeup routine by adding a few droplets to my concealer to avoid creasing and to avoid looking cakey.

DIY Self-care Tip: Always, always, always cleanse your skin at night. Makeup wipes are not enough. If you’re concerned about damaging your skin and/or aging your skin, it’s so important that you take the time to properly wash away any makeup, excess oil, or environmental pollutants on your face and neck. Find a good pH-balanced cleanser designed for your skin type to really avoid disrupting your skin’s barrier function. If you are unsure of what to use, schedule a facial appointment and ask your Esthetician for recommendations.

If you haven’t received a facial with Kassandra, now is the time! During the month of July and August, receive an AME Touch Facial for only $69 with Kassandra.

*Facial must be scheduled with Kassandra
*Must mention this offer when scheduling
*AME Touch Facial only
*May not be combined with any other offers
*July & August 2018

Rest on Water Experience

Our Soft-Pack Flotation (AKA Rest on Water) treatment is pretty AME-zing. This treatment was developed 40 years ago by Paul Haslauer along with a medical team of rheumatologists. The benefits of this treatment on your musculoskeletal system are astounding making it a favorite for those suffering from arthritis and other rheumatic diseases. Other people who especially love this treatment consist of athletes who participate in high-impact sports, those who suffer from disordered sleep, and those who really need some relaxation. Being a runner, I absolutely love the soft-packThere are few things this soothing on the muscles and joints. I always tell my clients, it’s pretty impossible to not relax and drift off when you are in the soft-pack.

Despite being called rest on water, you never come in contact with water during your float – leaving you dry. The idea is similar to a water-bed but better!

IMG_6840

Clients have the option of receiving a “solo float” where you remain in one of our robes for the duration of your float or the full Rest on Water treatment. Clients who wish to experience the full treatment will start off with a full body polish and then rinse in our swiss shower before being nestled and wrapped in hot mud, green tea, or body butter. They are then lowered into the soft-pack – your very own heated flotation bed – pure bliss. The gentle water pressure combined with the heat of the water, enhance your skin’s absorption of the body wrap product. This treatment allows your body to be just about weightless as you rest on water and let go, basically leaving you feeling like a new person when you are done. For pure relaxation, follow your Rest on Water treatment with a massage or facial.

May is the perfect month to try our Rest on Water Solo Float experience. When you schedule a 60 minute or longer massage or our Longevity Facial during May, you will receive a complimentary Rest on Water experience*. Find more details here

*This promotion is for the Rest on Water Float ONLY and does not include any body polish or wrap

May’s Spotlight is on AME Designer, Erika Kapeghian

About Erika: I have been a stylist at AME for nine years and I am also one of teachers in our associate training program. What gets me most excited about doing hair is the science behind it. I love working on test swatches and experimenting with unique and custom color combinations so that we are not just following trends – we are setting them.

Favorite Product: My current obsession is Doo Over by Kevin Murphy. It gives the lived in look that is super sexy right now. It can make a straight blow out look effortless and can make a wavy style look beachy and care-free.

DIY Styling Secret: I’m all about spending as little time as possible in the morning on my hair. So an easy trick my clients love is sleeping with a braid or two and then in the morning, take it out and hit a few pieces with a curling iron for perfect bohemian waves.
Summer rompers, gladiator sandals, and beach hair…. What’s not to love?!!!!

Fantastic pHacts

Alkaline and Acid in the Body

Do you understand the importance of alkaline and acid in the body? The most important thing to know is that illness is caused by acid. Acid and alkaline balance is extremely important to your health.

The Facts:

  • Illness is caused by Acidification
  • Alkaline -acid balance is one of the big keys to health. Once you master this in your diet, you will thrive. You will be surprised by all the diseases and ailments that are caused by acidity in the diet…and then in the body. Acidity causes disturbance in your enzymes, demineralization, and seriously harmful acid activity. If you are too acidic you may suffer from the following; No energy, Depression, Nervousness and agitation, Low stress threshold, Tooth and gum disease, Conjunctivitis, Cracking at the corners of your lips, Acidic diarrhea, Mineral and calcium depletion of bones, Osteoporosis, Inflamed intestines, Burning in the bladder, Runny nose and chills, dry skin, thin nails, dull, dry hair, leg cramping, Rheumatism, Arthritis, Sciatica, Tendinitis, Migrant joint pains

Understanding pH Balance:

The pH scale goes from 0 to 14
the numbers below 7 are acidic (low on oxygen) the numbers above 7 are alkaline

THIS IS IMPORTANT…

  • blood, lymph and cerebral spinal fluid in the human body are designed to be slightly alkaline at a pH of 7.4.
  • At a pH slightly above 7.4 cancer cells become dormant
  • at pH 8.5 cancer cells will die while healthy cells will live.

WHAT TO DO TO BE OPTIMALLY HEALTHY…

  • 60-80% of the diet should be alkaline
  • 20-40% should be acidic for an optimum result.

Acidic Diets Eat Up Your Minerals – Alkalizing Diets Replenish Your Minerals

So, what is acidic? Fried foods, animal products ….you get it. Alkaline is the good green stuff. When you eat acidic food, your body works like crazy to bring it back to an alkaline state…that is how you get sick…it robs your mineral stores to overcompensate…this is where the trouble comes in.

The standard American diet (sad) is acidic, burgers, cheese, coffee….all the stuff that gets eaten every day is eating up all the good things in your body. You need your minerals. Your body does not replenish its minerals. Once you use them, they are gone. If you want more you need to eat them.

Minerals help your body to build essentials to its health; proteins, enzymes, hormones, etc. Foods that are high in minerals are alkaline.

January’s Spotlight is on AME Senior Designer, Meaghan Madormo Cianci!

About Meaghan:  I’ve been in the hair industry for about 20 years. I first started out at the ripe young age of 9, as a guinea pig for my older sister when she decided at an early age she would become a hairstylist and I would be her first victim. I continued being a guinea pig until I became my sisters “associate” by applying her roots every 5 weeks. I had a passion for art in highschool and was always the one doing everyone’s hair for dances! So I figured why not combine the two?! After high school I went to beauty school and then started at AME and have been here for a solid 10 years and going strong. Let’s just say I was basically born to do this.

Favorite Product:  I don’t care if your hair is limp and fine, coarse and curly, short or long. BLOWN AWAY is probably the best thing Redken ever came out with. It has a gritty texture to it, a lot like a dry shampoo minus the white, matte powdery finish we’ve all become accustomed too. This little can of heaven will keep your blow outs for DAYS. It gives your blow outs a sexy texture with a volume that lasts, kind of like that “I-woke-up-like-this” sexy hair. So don’t be alarmed when you see can after can lined up at my station or in my vanity!! (It’s that good!)

Hair Trend I am loving:  It’s all about the color!!!!!! It doesn’t matter what hair length you have anymore, it’s all about the balayage highlights for more of a “lived-in” look, the baby lights, the ombré’s, the sombré’s, the ecallie (aka tortoise shell), the Brondes! I’m loving the Brondes!!! You brunette beauty’s who think you can’t pull off being light, oh but you can. I’m loving it all! Freshen up your locks with any of these trends and you’re golden (no pun intended). There’s no better way to change up your hair than with a little bit of color that’s only going to make you shine and enhance your awesome skin tones.

Best Kept Styling Secret:  Woke up late and in a rush? Nothing classier and sexier than a girl with a top knot! And honestly? The messier the sexier! Flip your head upside down, and put your hair in a pony tail. Split your pony into two sections and tease each section. Then just wrap the two sections around each other and secure with bobby pins all the way around. Pull some pieces loose around your face, by your temple and your ears, pair with some killer studs or some fabulous hoops and you’re ready to take on the day!

Holiday Survival Guide

Holiday Survival Guide

The holidays can be crazy but they don’t have to be. Here are 8 tips to help you find your peace this holiday season:

1. HYDRATE! When the weather starts to cool down, we start to forget we are thirsty. It is so very important to remember to drink your water. I always recommend drinking about half your body weight in ounces per day. i.e. if you weigh 130 lbs, you would drink 65 oz. per day. WHY is it so important to stay hydrated? Our body’s organs will not function to the best of their ability if we are not hydrated. Water allows the body to function properly and work to the best of its ability. Remember, our body is made up of roughly 70% water. Water also helps to keep our skin hydrated and prevent drying out in the cold weather.

Tip: Carry a water bottle with you at all times. I don’t go anywhere without either my hydroflask or lifefactory bottle.

 shutterstock_217131628

2. MOVE it. The benefits of exercise are endless. Some of the top benefits include: increased energy, combat health conditions/disease, improved self-confidence and mood, and many, many more! If you are already working out regularly – keep it up! Do not let the holidays stop you. If you are not regularly working out, now is a great time to start. For newbies, consider adding in walks or some light cardio on the treadmill or elliptical. A yoga or Pilates class is another great option- I always recommend Bikram (suitable for beginners). You can gradually work your way up to more vigorous workouts.

Tip: I highly recommend scheduling your “workout appointments”.  Write your workouts in your daily planner and respect these appointments as you would any other. Your health is top priority. A workout buddy is another great way to help you stick to your workouts as long as they are dedicated and reliable, otherwise – they will help you make excuses!

shutterstock_234489328

3. EMBRACE it all. I absolutely love the holidays and I believe it’s because I embrace (almost) everything about them. I love the commotion and excitement. Lights, decorations, hustle & bustle. It’s a warm and fuzzy time of year. I have a very hard time letting such a good thing stress me out. Take deep breaths, embrace the craziness, and remember the true meanings of the holidays.

Tip: Think of a holiday tradition you can do every year to get you in the holiday spirit!

shutterstock_119217034

4. FUEL with Intention. Eating habits can become a vicious cycle around the holidays. Don’t let this happen. If you get derailed, remember that everyday is a fresh start. Unfortunately, flu season coincides with the holiday season so it is extra important to execute healthy eating habits. Doing this will keep your immune system strong and ready to fight off illness. Healthy eating will help you have more energy so you are able to more productive and you will feel better. Proceed with caution at all social gatherings. One of the worst ideas, in my opinion (and I have been guilty of this) is not eating much during the day in an attempt to “save yourself” for a gathering. More than likely, you will be starving by the time you get there and make not so great choices once there and/or end up overeating.

Tip: I LOVE my crock pot this time of year. I usually make something healthy on my day off that I can have throughout the week in order to prevent any last-minute, not-so-healthy-choices due to lack of time. Meal planning is HUGE. I try to eat extra veggies and greens the day of a party. By making better food choices the day of a gathering, you can crowd out the not so great choices.

shutterstock_83679952

5. ALCOHOL with caution. Alcohol is very capable of being your biggest saboteur. We all know this. Commit to setting limits for your consumption. If I want to have a glass or two when I am out, I will skip having a glass at home during the week. I also find it helpful to decide before I go to a party whether I want to have a glass or two of wine OR dessert, then stick to it. The key is not having more than a glass or two otherwise, it is likely that my inhibitions will be lowered and I will end up having alcohol AND dessert. If that happens at every gathering -> NOT GOOD! To help me stick to my plan, I think about the hard work that went into my workouts leading up to now, the progress I have made, and the workout I want to get in the next day. If I feel like crap the next day, I will likely not feel like working out. It is not worth it to let the alcohol negate all of my hard work.

Tip: I often like to commit to being the DD when we go to parties (My fiancé lovingly supports this decision) because then drinking is not even an option, allowing me to feast mindfully and avoid the empty, liquid calories.

6. Keep it simple and BUDGET. Make a list and check it twice. It can be tempting to go overboard with gifts but it’s unnecessary. I like to make a list of every person I want to buy for and then write down about 3-5 ideas for each person of things they can really use. I also set a total holiday budget and then a budget for each individual on my list. The list helps prevent impulse buys and having three to five ideas allows for flexibility while I am out shopping.

Tip: Really consider what the person you are buying for needs, not what you want them to want. I always appreciate getting gifts that I can use rather than something I could take or leave that ends up creating clutter or I have to return.

I love The Center for a New American Dream, Simplify the Holidays resources. This site has so many resources to help you really appreciate the true meaning of the season and enjoy the holidays. I love their holiday calendar and  alternative gift tracker. They also have a free, downloadable booklet filled with practical tips for more joy, less stress.

7. DONATE. It is not the holiday season if you haven’t helped someone in need. Clothes, food, toys, shoes, books, your time, *SOCKS. The possibilities are endless. Choose a child/family to “adopt” for the holiday. It’s so much fun. You get the child’s/children’s ages, wish list, etc. It feels really good to be able to help people in need have a merrier holiday. Every year I am thankful I am in a place to be able to help those in need. Wegman’s sets up a donation box for new toys. Many books stores, gyms, hospitals, churches, and others do the same. Veterinary offices and animal shelters usually collect food/toys for shelter animals. Also, consider donating after the holidays. If you have kids who tend to get tons from relatives, encourage them to donate some of their “excess” to kids in need.

Tip: Make this your holiday tradition.

*Socks are one of the most needed items that are rarely donated. Read more here.

8. ME TIME. Give this to yourself. This will keep you going merrily. You deserve it and don’t convince yourself otherwise. Enjoy a massage, facial, pedicure, etc. Take a nice bubble bath and just relax or read in there. Curl up with a blanket and a book. Watch your favorite Christmas movie while drinking hot chocolate. Make cookies (if you find that therapeutic). Meditate.

Tip: LOSE THE PHONE (and other electronics) for your me time. I’m serious. Give this time to yourself. Put your phone on silent and leave it in another room or stash it in a drawer. If you are having a spa service, leave it in the car.
