As AME’s Health Coach, I think it’s pretty obvious health is a top concern for me. When Designer Director, Beth Forte came to me to talk about how our overall health affects the health of our hair, I couldn’t have been more excited. I’m a ponytail wearing kind of girl so I sometimes forget to check in on the health of my hair. This was a great reminder. Here’s what Beth had to say:

Fall has officially arrived at AME Salon! We have been in full swing using the latest methods in cutting and coloring on our fabulous guests. However, babylights, ombré, and the Lob will only look as good as the health of your hair. Healthy hair is shiny, manageable, and nourished. Brunette’s and Red’s will appear richer, Blondes will be brighter, and haircuts will flow better if hair is in good health.

Here are four tips to get your hair in the best condition:

  1. Be healthy and it’ll show in your hair. When your body is not being cared for by poor nutrition and dehydration, your hair suffers too. Your body will give your major organs what it needs first.  Dr. Mark Hyman states, “Your entire body and all the core systems in it interact as a single sophisticated symphony.” To strengthen and moisturize your hair follicle you need to eat foods rich in biotin, vitamin B, healthy fats, and beta carotene. Almonds, eggs, avocados, salmon, chicken, dark leafy greens, chia seeds, sweet potatoes, carrots, and mangoes are full of those vitamins and minerals. To dig further into this topic, I would suggest meeting with our health coach, Alyssa.
  2. Get trims regularly. Every 6-8 weeks or however long your stylist recommends. It’ll prevent split ends from splitting further up your hair shaft and prevent breakage.
  3. Limit heat styling tools. Too much heat can damage the cuticle. Kevin Murphy’s ‘Damage Manager’ is an instant heat shielding spray used before heated appliances. KM’s ‘Fresh Hair’ spray can be used to stretch out blow-drys. It removes odors and oil and gives body and texture.
  4. Olaplex in salon and take home Treatment. Olaplex links broken bonds in the hair during and after chemical services making them stronger than they were before. The results are amazing!

Focusing on your overall wellness and nutrition, seeing your stylist for trims, blow-drying less, and using good quality products will guarantee beautiful, shiny, healthy hair!

AME’s stylists are headed into July with some new techniques! Last week, AME hosted an in-salon educational class. Redken Educator, Roger Molina spent the day with our stylists teaching them new techniques for styling and cutting hair as well as some product knowledge. AME owner, Lori Pastore is committed to ensuring her stylists stay up-to-date on the latest trends, techniques, and products. Roger will be visiting AME again to focus on barbering techniques.

Marie, AME Stylist talked with me about some of the great techniques the stylists learned from Roger:

Roger showed us some really creative ways to style hair using a needle and string as well as some exceptional techniques for cutting a “Lob” (AKA long bob). Roger used string to weave through the hair in order to pull it up instead of using lots of pins.

We learned how to do a tight fade for women and men. A tight fade is a short haircut that starts extremely close to the hairline and gets longer as it goes up the head. Some women are sporting this style but on a longer scale than men.

As stylists, we love using our knowledge to think outside the box and create personalized looks for our clients. It’s such a great feeling being able to give our clients the exact look they want that best fits them so that they can look and feel their very best.

Feel free to ask your stylist if you would like to learn more about any of these techniques. They can’t wait to work with you! Be sure to check out our fabulous promotions for July and August!

I was talking with one of AME’s senior stylists, Meaghan and she is super excited for some new Spring looks! I had a blast hearing about these Spring hair trends.

Here’s what Meaghan had to say:
Ombré is still going strong, and that’s great because it’s SOOO low maintenance! It requires very little touch-ups and looks fabulous as it grows out!
image1
Another really popular look is face framing highlights, which I like to call “Baby-Lights”. This is our strongest attempt at recreating that color we all had when we were little. Beautiful and seamless! Now, if only there were a way to make our life and responsibilities as care-free as well.

Lastly, we have balayage which means “to sweep” on the color free-hand using no foils. This is a subtle way to add some color and brightness without going over the top!

Don’t worry, guys – I didn’t forget about you. The fades are still really strong this season with options from keeping it very professional all the way to super hipster.

I can’t wait to get your hair Spring fresh! Whatever the look you’re going for, your stylist is here to help! Be sure to schedule a consultation/appointment!

February is Heart Health Month!

You may have heard, heart disease is the number one cause of death for men and women in the United States and has been for quite some time. This is truly heartbreaking (no pun intended) because there are so many actions we can take in order to help prevent heart disease.

High blood pressure and smoking are two of the top risk factors for heart disease. In addition; lack of physical exercise, poor diet, being overweight, diabetes, and excessive alcohol consumption all increase your risk for heart disease.

images

What can we do to help prevent heart disease?

*The above mentioned are all topics I would love to help you achieve as your health coach. The added accountability, recommendations, and outside perspective truly help people achieve and maintain their health goals. Having a health coach is often the final step people need to achieve balance and optimum health. Please contact me for more information about Health Coaching or contact AME today to set up a consultation! Alyssa@www.amesalonandspa.com

Check out some of these fabulous tips from PopSugar Fitness on How To Be Healthier. The only tip I do not recommend trying is #18: The 80/20 rule. I really don’t like this eating principle and I find this typically does not work well for people. It is hard to keep understand what 20% of our food intake is and if you take indulging too far, you are likely to negate all of your hard work and dedication. I prefer to just focus on practicing healthy eating most of the time.

AME is currently hosting an online wellness group focusing on heart health and self-care. This group will continue to run until February 28th. We would love to have you! Please let me know if you would like to join us. Alyssa@www.amesalonandspa.com

One of our fabulous estheticians, Debbie has some great holiday skin care advice for you:

Debbie

“It’s all About that Face, no Trouble!

In light of the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping, shipping and schlepping, the holidays truly are the most wonderful time of year. Generosity abounds, goodwill towards mankind seems effortless. However as important as finding the perfect gift, so is allowing yourself the much needed time to refresh your skin and to give your face the attention it deserves!

Dehydration, dark circles, and tired stress lines are in part due to the hectic pace we keep. Constant indoor/outdoor temperature fluctuation wreaks havoc on your complexion. For your skin to look its best be sure to schedule the time for a professional facial. As your esthetician, we will assess your immediate needs and provide your FACIAL fix as well as help you with your long-term aging remedies. Be sure to drink more water during the winter months because the body works harder to stay warm and uses up its moisture reservoir. Also, consider a humidifier* in your bedroom as this will make a huge improvement on your skin’s moisture retention. Above all, be sure to use a high quality night cream… it’s the most important time for your skin to replenish and restore lost nutrients preparing for yet another day of holiday havoc! 🙂 “

*I use this humidifier and I love it. I definitely notice a difference since using it. Just make sure to clean your humidifier on a regular basis.

Debbie’s top choices for night time care:

Click HERE to view our many facials and then call us to schedule your facial with Debbie or any of our other talented estheticians. I can tell you from experience, you will not be disappointed! My personal favorite is the Mega Peel Facial but your esthetician will help you decide which facial best fits your needs.

I would also recommend the Clarisonic (we carry a variety of colors). I LOVE it! My mom gave me the Clarisonic for Christmas one year and it is by far one of my most favorite gifts. I use it everyday and I love how much it has improved my skin. Feel free to ask Debbie or any of our other estheticians if you would like to learn more about the clarisonic or any of our other skin care products.

pumkin oat cookies

I made these really yummy cookies for Thanksgiving and more since then just to enjoy at home. I can’t say they were a huge hit with my T-Day crowd (I think the pies and other sweets upstaged them) but I love them. They’re not terribly sweet which I like. You can make them plain or dipped in chocolate. The chocolate adds the perfect amount of sweetness. The ingredients are so great, I’ll enjoy a plain one (or chocolate dipped depending on my mood) with breakfast.

Recipe: Easy Dark Chocolate-Dipped Pumpkin Cookies by Elizabeth Rider

Notes:

Who’s making cookies? What kinds? Please let me know if you have a recipe I should try.

Speaking of sweets, if you missed the post on our FB page about sneaky sugar, check it out here. Yet another reason showing you how important it is to read your food labels carefully. Helping you navigate these sneaky encounters is one of the many benefits of having a Health Coach. As always, feel free to contact me with any sugar, label reading, or other health and wellness questions you might have. I enjoy hearing from you! Alyssa@www.amesalonandspa.com

Thanksgiving is almost here! I love Thanksgiving: Family, Food, Fun! If anyone is still putting together their T-Day menu or searching for a recipe to bring, I found some that sound delicious! I haven’t made any of these recipes yet (it’s on today’s list) so please let me know if you do and how they turn out!

If you’re hosting this year, remind yourself to breathe, embrace the holiday craziness, and remember the meaning of Thanksgiving.

One of our very talented nail technicians, Brittani read your minds and wants to tell you why it is so very important to keep up with your pedicures throughout the winter:

Britt

“As we put away our summer sandals and dust off our snow boots, many clients think that pedicure season is over when in fact – it is just as important during the winter.

Are you wondering why?

  • During the winter months many people suffer from dry skin. Harsh weather and forced heat can cause our skin to become scaly and cracked. Having a pedicure regularly will reduce dry skin and break down the barrier to your “new” skin and absorb the lotion.
  • Healthy toes nails – Face it – it’s tough to cut your own toe nails without getting them lopsided! Improper trimming and filing can lead to ingrown toe nails which are painful and can lead to infection. Regular trimming and filing will prevent this and leave you with strong, healthy nails.
  • Relieve stress – Foot massage has been practiced for hundreds of years. Massage feels good but also helps to ease tight muscles, reduce swelling, and aids in improved joint mobility. The increased blood flow brings oxygen to the tissue in the feet and legs.

Lets Go Naked…I mean on your toes. You love getting a pedicure but it’s snowing out. Giving your nail beds a break from polish is a GREAT idea! We will buff, shine and add some SolarOil to those thirsty nail beds.

So the next time you look at those feet that carry you about your busy day – why not schedule a break for you and for them?

Schedule a pedicure today!”

Brittani recommends trying our Hot Paraffin Pedicure this season. The hot paraffin is very therapeutic and feels amazing. If you have dry, aching feet, this one’s calling your name!

Check out Janice and Britt on the FB for more fun nail advice and please feel free to post your fresh nails to AME’s FB page so we can see how they look after your AME nail lovin.

The Philly Marathon was on Sunday. It was fabulous. I don’t want to bore anyone with all the details BUT if you are interested in a full race recap, feel free to check out my fitness blog. After the race, I indulged in a little post race recovery with some of my favorite products. I throw the Rica bathtub tea and soaking stones in my bath water for the ultimate recovery. The tea comes with a reusable, muslin bag that you just fill with the herbs and soak in your tub. The  herbs are aromatic and soften your skin! The soaking stones are bath salts that smell amazing and help relieve muscle tension. I turned the jets on and I was set. After my bath, I hydrated with Jack Black’s body hydrator. This has to be one of my favorite moisturizers of all time and I have tried a TON.

Reasons I love it:

  • Softest. Skin. Ever. That’s enough for me right there!
  • Fabulous smell. It’s a light, non offensive scent-great for an everyday go-to lotion
  • Lightweight, absorbs quickly
  • No: phthalates, parabens, sulfates
  • I am very generous with this lotion on my thighs and back side. Here’s why: Green tea and coffee seed oil. Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant-> fight free radicals. Both have been said to help minimize/prevent cellulite. Giddy-up!

Meet Gracie, our sweet foster hog. She LOVES the tub. I ended up having to kick her out of the bathroom because she kept trying to jump in with me. Can you blame her? She is searching for her forever home and we would love to find her one for the holidays. Contact me if you would like to meet her!

Happy, Happy Thanksgiving to YOU! AME is so grateful for all of our clients. We always look forward to seeing you and getting to know you. Thank you for brightening our days! Enjoy your holidays – I’m off to get my nails did!

Do tell:

  • What are you cooking this year?
  • Who’s hosting?
  • What are some of your favorite AME pedicures? Nail colors?
  • Who is running a Turkey Trot this year? Which one?
  • Favorite bath products?
  • Did you run Philly Marathon? Favorite sign?

Ayurveda Tip #3 Yoga

Yoga Practice

I hear it all the time, “I ‘m not flexible. I can’t do yoga.” The truth is, you’re inflexible because you don’t do yoga.

I hear it all the time, “I ‘m not flexible. I can’t do yoga.”
The truth is, you’re inflexible because you don’t do yoga.

I hear it all the time, “I ‘m not flexible. I can’t do yoga.”

The truth is, you’re inflexible because you don’t do yoga. (this applies to the mind as well, by the way).  Yoga is literally for every body. Because the essence of yoga is union ~ of body, mind, heart and spirit, the practice of it, no matter how quiet or rigorous, is about bringing more awareness to every aspect of your Being.  It’s not important that you can twist your body into a pretzel – most people can’t – even yoga teachers. What’s important is that you spend some time each day on your mat to be present with your body, mind, and spirit. That is, really feeling your body & the messages it is sending you, the state of your mind and emotions, and connecting to your soul – that aspect of you that is perfect just as it is.

Commit to at least 10-15 minutes of gentle stretching and breathing each day and feel the difference it will make in your strength, flexibility, and balance. This translates to strength, flexibility, balance in your life.  Commit to trying it for a month – take a class, buy a book, watch a video, or Google “gentle yoga”. There are many resources out there to help you learn, even classes online.  Yoga is a practice that can always take you deeper so you do not need to learn everything at once.  See if you don’t notice a difference in yourself after several weeks. So relax, stretch and breathe! You’ll find yourself craving it and noticing even more when you don’t do it.

Enjoy!
