As AME’s Health Coach, I think it’s pretty obvious health is a top concern for me. When Designer Director, Beth Forte came to me to talk about how our overall health affects the health of our hair, I couldn’t have been more excited. I’m a ponytail wearing kind of girl so I sometimes forget to check in on the health of my hair. This was a great reminder. Here’s what Beth had to say:
Fall has officially arrived at AME Salon! We have been in full swing using the latest methods in cutting and coloring on our fabulous guests. However, babylights, ombré, and the Lob will only look as good as the health of your hair. Healthy hair is shiny, manageable, and nourished. Brunette’s and Red’s will appear richer, Blondes will be brighter, and haircuts will flow better if hair is in good health.
Here are four tips to get your hair in the best condition:
- Be healthy and it’ll show in your hair. When your body is not being cared for by poor nutrition and dehydration, your hair suffers too. Your body will give your major organs what it needs first. Dr. Mark Hyman states, “Your entire body and all the core systems in it interact as a single sophisticated symphony.” To strengthen and moisturize your hair follicle you need to eat foods rich in biotin, vitamin B, healthy fats, and beta carotene. Almonds, eggs, avocados, salmon, chicken, dark leafy greens, chia seeds, sweet potatoes, carrots, and mangoes are full of those vitamins and minerals. To dig further into this topic, I would suggest meeting with our health coach, Alyssa.
- Get trims regularly. Every 6-8 weeks or however long your stylist recommends. It’ll prevent split ends from splitting further up your hair shaft and prevent breakage.
- Limit heat styling tools. Too much heat can damage the cuticle. Kevin Murphy’s ‘Damage Manager’ is an instant heat shielding spray used before heated appliances. KM’s ‘Fresh Hair’ spray can be used to stretch out blow-drys. It removes odors and oil and gives body and texture.
- Olaplex in salon and take home Treatment. Olaplex links broken bonds in the hair during and after chemical services making them stronger than they were before. The results are amazing!
Focusing on your overall wellness and nutrition, seeing your stylist for trims, blow-drying less, and using good quality products will guarantee beautiful, shiny, healthy hair!
October’s Spotlight is on Kimberly Stark! Kimberly is a massage therapist and has been with AME since February.
About Kimberly: I’m a history nerd, animal lover, and massage therapist with a passion for holistic healing and wellness.
Favorite Product: I LOVE Sombra pain relieving gel! Everyone has aches and pains and it eases my mind knowing there’s a product with all natural ingredients I can use on and recommend to my clients to help with those pains.
Best Kept Self-Care Secret: I’m a coconut oil enthusiast. That’s why I love that our massage oil for our clients is coconut oil. I use it as an overnight conditioner, makeup remover, mouthwash, and as a moisturizer.
If you would like to schedule an appointment with Kimberly or Beth, call AME: 610-995-2631
Ahhh, Coconut oil. Coconut oil can be used for a whole lot of things and the benefits are astounding!
Coconut oil is great in raw food recipes:
I also enjoy cooking with coconut oil. I love to add some to my veggies before roasting them. It gives them such a great flavor.
Coconut oil is also great in showers since it can be used as a cleanser as well as a moisturizer for your whole body, some people use it on their faces.
It’s not a bad idea to keep it on your nightstand to remind yourself to moisturize with it – especially this time of year when our skin has been
left dry from the cold weather. Coconut oil is great to massage into your scalp. It is so beneficial for your hair and skin. There is a lot
to be said for anything that is chemical free that we can use on our bodies. When it comes to using products on my body, I always figure
if you can eat it, that’s a great thing.
There are a lot of ways to use coconut oil and there are even more reasons why you should.
Coconut oil has lauric acid, caprylic acid, capric acid. These acids give it antimicrobial, antifungal, antibacterial and antioxidant
abilities. It is mostly saturated fat, 92% with a small percentage being mono unsaturated and poly unsaturated. Coconut oil is
one of those healthy fats!
Some of the benefits that are attributed to coconut oil include (but not limited to) help with:
“Coconut oil has fewer calories than any other fat source. Unlike the high-calorie, cholesterol-soaked, long-chain,
saturated animal fats found in meat and dairy products, coconut cream and coconut oil are made of raw saturated fats
containing mostly medium-chain fatty acids that the body can metabolize efficiently and convert to energy quickly.” (Wolfe, 2009)
In the 1940’s, coconut oil was used by some farmers to help fatten up their cows however; the opposite happened-the
cows actually became leaner.
Coconut oil is useful for bone and dental health because it improves calcium and magnesium absorption. This is good for
dental health. It is especially beneficial to women who are at the age to develop osteoporosis.
When you go to order or purchase your coconut oil this is what you should look for: organic-raw-extra virgin-cold pressed. I love Blue Mountain Organics.
There is also coconut water (yum!), shredded coconut, and coconut butter! Just make sure the products you are
buying do not have added sugars. I love drinking coconut water on its own or adding it to my
smoothies. Coconut water is loaded with potassium and it helps replace fluids and salts lost during exercise.
When I am training for a marathon, I try to drink coconut water every day. I look for raw, organic. I love
Harmless Harvest and Harvest Bay (organic, unflavored variety) brands. I try to avoid Zico, Vita-Coco, O.N.E., and Naked coconut water.
If you don’t already, start adding coconut oil into life, you will not be sorry!

The holiday season is officially here (don’t shoot the messenger)! I LOVE this time of year and for that reason, I try to make it last as long as possible. I have been known to keep my trees up well into February. I don’t see anything wrong with that. I picked this little guy up (it’s real and it’s spectacular) from Wegman’s to hold me over until we get our living room Christmas tree. Our whole downstairs now smells like Christmas. It just feels so right. Who else has started their holiday decorating?
